If you are like many cyclists, you are very passionate about cycling, and you should be. It provides a great workout, reduces congestion on the road and is better for the environment than driving.

Unfortunately, this mode of transportation can be dangerous, and cyclists are at risk of serious injury from other vehicles. Many people advocate for measures that make roads safer for bicycles, but in the meantime, you can take some steps to reduce your personal risk.

Wear the proper clothing and protective gear

Everyone knows that a helmet is a must, but do you ever think about the other items you should wear to ensure your safety? Proper shoes and close-fitting pants can prevent an accident. Waterproof clothing can keep you comfortable and warm in the rain, allowing you to focus on the road.

Make sure cars can see you

Visibility is perhaps the most important factor in preventing a collision with a car. In addition to reflectors, you may want to consider a headlight or other highly visible lights for your bike. Wearing reflective materials will also help cars see and avoid you.

Behave predictably

As a cyclist, you will always be at the disadvantage of an accident involving a larger vehicle. Because of this, it is essential that act in predictable ways. This includes:

  • Following the flow and pace of traffic
  • Using signals
  • Obeying traffic lights and traffic signs

Even when you take every measure to protect yourself, an accident can still happen. If it does, you should seek medical attention immediately and document the event thoroughly.
