A delivery truck

Delivery trucks are becoming increasingly common on our roadways. These trucks deliver thousands of packages to homes and businesses on a daily basis.

Because of their size, these vehicles can cause serious property damage, injuries, and even death when they are involved in a truck accident. At Sumner Law, serving Concord, CA, and the entire East Bay, Scott Sumner provides legal assistance to those involved in truck accidents with delivery trucks. He can determine if you should seek compensation for any injuries you sustained in the truck accident.

Types of Delivery Trucks

There are many types of delivery vehicles on the road. We typically think of Fedex, UPS, and DHL when thinking about the different types of delivery trucks. However, there are many other delivery trucks operating on our highways, city streets, and rural roadways.

Many companies also have their own delivery trucks. For example, Amazon is now using its own branded delivery trucks. In addition, many local businesses, such as flower shops and catering services also operate their own delivery vehicles.

Types of Accidents Involving Delivery Trucks

Because the drivers of delivery trucks are operating such large vehicles, it is important that they follow all safety guidelines to prevent a collision from occurring. Unfortunately, accidents do still occur, most often due to:

  • Driver distraction: All drivers are subject to distractions. Delivery drivers may be even more at risk for distracted driving if they are unfamiliar with their route and checking GPS for directions.
  • Speeding: Speeding is always dangerous because it increases the risk of an auto accident, and can contribute to more severe injuries. Delivery drivers may speed in an attempt to get all of their deliveries out on time.
  • Fatigue: Delivery drivers may be overtired due to working too many hours or simply not getting enough sleep at night. In either case, driving while sleepy greatly increases the risk of an auto accident.
  • Poor vehicle maintenance: The delivery company is responsible for regularly inspecting and maintaining the vehicle. If the vehicle is not properly maintained and repaired, problems with the brakes, steering, or tires can increase the risk of an accident.
  • Poor driver training: Delivery companies are also responsible for hiring safe drivers and providing proper training. If the company failed in either of these areas, the company may be liable for the accident.

Should You Seek Compensation?

If you were involved in an auto accident in which the other driver or another party was at fault, you can seek compensation for all damages related to the accident. This includes property damage, medical expenses for your injuries, lost wages due to the injury, and pain and suffering.
