2 common spine injuries after an accident

When you are involved in a car accident, slip and fall, motorcycle accident or similar traumatic event, suffering injuries are likely. Due to the impact and force of these accidents, your spine may take the impact, which can result in serious and life-changing injuries.

While this is true, some injuries may not be immediately evident. Because of this, you must seek a medical evaluation after the accident. Along with being evaluated by a medical professional, take time to know the signs you may have a spinal injury that requires treatment

Herniated discs

The discs in your spine serve as cushions for your vertebrae and are essentially the “shock absorbers” of your body. They are made up of a soft center similar to jelly and a tough exterior. If a herniated disc occurs, the soft center has started leaking through the exterior and is now putting pressure on the nearby nerves.

Symptoms of this injury depend on where in the spine the problem exists. Some of the most common include muscle weakness, pain and numbness in the arms or legs.

Fractures in the vertebrae

Just like the other bones in your body, your vertebrae can be fractured. While some are mild and can heal easily, others are more serious and can require surgical intervention. These are commonly seen in motor vehicle accidents.

Because of how serious back fractures can be, it is recommended that a doctor evaluates you right after an accident to ensure the problem does not get worse.

Don’t wait to seek medical treatment

Injuries to your spine can lead to serious complications if they aren’t treated immediately. Also, seeking medical treatment is beneficial if you plan to file a personal injury lawsuit in the future.
