3 tips to help you drive safely in traffic jams

Traffic during the summer time is often different from other times of year because people are likely to be out enjoying the weather. They may be taking road trips or taking weekend getaways. The increase in traffic means that there might be more traffic jams

Whether you’re heading out for a day of fun or to go to work, getting stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic can test your patience. These tips may help you as you deal with this situation.

1. Plan your trip carefully

Before you even get on the road, take a moment to check traffic and weather conditions. Apps and GPS systems often offer alternate routes that might help you avoid major bottlenecks. If you’re traveling long distances, consider driving early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler and roads are less crowded.

2. Watch for sudden stops and stay alert

It’s tempting to zone out in a jam, but summer traffic brings unique hazards. More drivers are on the road, and many of them may be unfamiliar with the area. That increases the risk of sudden lane changes or brake taps. Leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead, and stay off your phone.

3. Stay in your lane

Some people think that switching lanes to try to get into the fastest one is going to help them reach their destination faster, but that’s a dangerous decision. Even if it means your trip will take a few minutes longer, staying in your lane is much safer. Use your signal if you have to switch lanes.

Even if you’re driving safely, there’s a chance someone else may do something that causes a crash. You may need extensive medical care if that occurs. Once you receive that care, you might opt to pursue a compensation claim to help you recover costs related to the crash.
