When might you want to refuse to lend your teen your car keys?

If you are like many parents of teens, you may be getting used to the fact that you will no longer be the only one driving your car. Buying another car is not always possible, so many families just let their teens borrow the car when they need it.

Now that your teen is off school for the summer, there’s a good chance they will be asking for it more frequently. Even if you have fond memories of your first summer with a license, it is wise to remember that sometimes the best answer you can give is a firm no, especially since summer sees more fatal crashes involving teen drivers than any other time. The following are some times when it’s better to refuse.

When drugs or alcohol may be a temptation

Everyone knows that many minors get up to things they are not supposed to, including consuming alcohol or marijuana. Even if you are OK with your child doing these things, it’s vital you do not give them the keys if you believe they will consume.

When they are too tired

It’s important to remember that tiredness can kill when driving, and if you feel your child needs more sleep before being safe to drive, then it’s best to put your foot down if they want to take the car.

When their mind is preoccupied with other things

Distraction can also be incredibly dangerous, so think twice about lending your child the car if their mind is clearly on their recent breakup or upcoming exam results rather than anything happening around them.

Doing your best to keep your teen safe won’t always be enough. Sometimes, however careful they are, another driver could crash into them. If that happens, learning how to help them claim compensation will be crucial. Thankfully, seeking legal guidance is always an option.
